Yoshitomo Nara at the Asia Society - Beware...

What a better day to mention that Nara, one of my all times favorite artists,  is having a show at the Asia Society in New York. Words wouldn't describe my mood today as well as this painting does:

or this one:

No particular reason to be in such foul mood except that Oops has been the neediest dog today, making it hard to get anything done... He looks a bit like this:

See what I mean??

Sadly, images on the Asia Society website don't show much new work  but I'm looking forward to see his installation of Home which I saw him build in the documentary Travelling with Nara.

I heard there are also some of his new ceramics but I couldn't find them on the Asia Society website. I'm hoping they are some such as the ones shown at the Tomio Koyama Gallery in Tokyo earlier this year:

The exhibition runs until January 2, 2011 - let me know what you think if you see it before I do!

Lari Washburn

Did I ever mention how much I LOVE my friend Lari in Maine.. well guess what, her blog is as beautiful as she is.. and I can NOT get enough of her new paintings:

I love to visit her blog to see what inspires her, and how her work evolves. It has been fascinating to follow her daily drawings, such as her soap bubbles

or those which have motifs  I love to find again in her paintings

Oh, and she also brags about the beautiful places she visits and the great food she eats, but I don't mind drooling over my computer because I too have good food and get to see beauty..

Visit her here and let me know what you think!

Nothing wrong with big ears..

When I got Oops 9 years ago, someone in the street commented that he would hopefully grow into his ears...  I remember being shocked because I thought he was absolutely perfect.. what were they talking about???

Nine  years later, I obviously still think he is perfect, but must admit that he did grow into his ears... a little bit...

However, his new girlfriend (Lucy the bat) is full grown and, to my delight, still has big ears:

Yesterday I found this childhood picture.. I wonder if that explains my taste for big ears...

I'm on the right... I hope I too did grow into my ears...

My life and art have not been separated. They have been together. (Eva Hesse)

I was just thinking I needed to re-look at some of Eva Hesse's artwork and found that quote from her. One more reason to be inspired...

No swearing allowed on this blog...

and that is a good thing because there would  have been a lot of that this week, when I lost access to the Internet for 3 days..  Anyhow, it's all good now, we're back in service and have a lot to catch up on... but one thing at a time..

Photographer formidable and friend Stella Johnson got her work featured on NPR.  I've always admired Stella's black and white photos but this color group, where she tries to reconnect with her Greek roots, is amazing:

More of Stella's work can be seen on  NPR's Blog and on her website here
And I'm ready to go back to Greece!

What are they thinking??

Hasn't the whole thing about the VW Beetle always been about being round and cute?  sweet and soft?  I just ran across a picture of the 2011 model and it looks like it went under a truck:

Very sad... especially when they could have gone like this instead:

Now we're talking.. that would be my next car if it was available...
I might give it a try on my old Civic but the roundness cuteness factor isn't quite there..

Belle Isle (East Boston)

Those of you that are in the Boston area know that Chelsea and East Boston don't have much nature... That's why I am always amazed to find Belle Isle in our neighborhood. It's the last of Boston's salt marshes and really offers a beautiful green oasis in a rather urban environment..

Anna Hepler - Portland Museum of Art until October 17, 2010

I was lucky to see this show last month in Portland, Maine.
Also made of recycled plastic sheeting and tarps...

cut in strips, then woven and stitched together,

layer over layer...

You can see more of her work on her work at http://www.annahepler.com/, and a great video of her installation and process here.
